Why Is My Water Not Draining?

After doing the dishes or taking a shower, you notice that the water isn’t flowing the way it should. It starts to pool, making a small pond out of your kitchen sink or bathroom. It’s annoying, right? What is stopping the water from flowing in your house? Let’s look at some of the reasons.

Common Causes of Water Not Draining

Food Waste Blockages

Kitchen sinks get dirty quickly with food scraps, grease, and oils from cooking. Little bits of food, even the ones you don’t think are important, can build up over time and cause a clog that won’t go away. Foods like pasta, rice, and greasy fats are especially sneaky because they grow and harden in the drain, making it impossible to flush

Soap Scum Buildup

A clog can be caused by soap, did you know that? There may not be enough room for water to flow through your lines as soap scum builds up over time. Bathroom sinks and tubs often have this issue.

Foreign Objects in the Drain

Things that shouldn’t be in the drain, like small toys or pieces of cotton or paper, can get stuck and cause a backup. If you can’t figure out why your water isn’t draining, quickly check the drain hole to see if anything strange is blocking it.

Hair Buildup

Hair often gets stuck in bathroom drains. Hair from shaving, washing, or cleaning can get stuck in your pipes and make them very hard to use. After some time, the buildup gets thick, and the water will either drain very slowly or not at all.

What Can You Do?

Before you panic and call a plumber, there are a few things you can try to clear the blockage yourself:

  • Plunger Action: A simple plunger can often do the trick for minor clogs, especially in the kitchen sink or bathroom.
  • Drain Snake:  This tool can reach deep into your pipes and grab onto hair or other debris that’s causing the issue.
  • Boiling Water: For grease or soap blockages, try pouring a kettle of boiling water down the drain. The heat can sometimes dissolve these softer clogs.
